Vicarious Korea - 003 Hongdae Life
Hongdae(홍대) is one of the busiest places in Seoul on Friday nights. Hongdae is shortened name for Hong-Ik University. When majority people talk about Hongdae, they are talking about the vicinity/neighborhood of Hongdae, not really about the university. The three words that describe Hongdae the best are art, music, and bars/clubs.
Anyway, I went to Hongdae on the 5th with my friend Hyejin. Even though we were pretty hungry, we went on a journey to find this place that has 떠먹는 스시. I really don’t know how to describe it, but it’s the same thing as chirashi. So we ordered chirashi and cheese ebidonkatsudon(katsudon second day in a row wut). Chirashi was incredibly big and tasty, while we barely touched cheese ebidonkatsudon.
After this, we went to this three floored bar. Basement is a club, 1st floor is cafe style bar, and 2nd floor, where i was, is a open terrace bar. The scenery and atmosphere was just perfect for two girls in the twenties to just freely enjoy a glass of Kahlua and bottle of Corona.
Anyway, that’s it for now about Hongdae, but I will pretty much be living here next 45 days or so. Annyoung for now!
Vicarious Korea - 002 Jet-lags & thangs
I have been incredibly jet-lagged past two days and had the hardest time falling asleep at night. Yesterday(July 4th), I felt like I really didn’t get much done because of lack of sleep. First thing, I went to go get my phone activated, but went to a wrong store for that. It was essentially taking AT&T iPhone to Verizon store and asking them to activate it. Yeah, no. People thought I was an idiot.
Then I went to a hagwon to sign up for classes except the people at the front desk told me that the classes that I wanted to sign up wasn’t available. After failing at two things I was kind of down.
Afterwards I got to see my friend Joonhyun from elementary school. Believe or not, most Koreans stay in touch with a lot of elementary schools and still are very close. We went to go get katsudon which was delicious and CHEAP(slightly over 5 dollars).
Afterwards Joonhyun and I went to my elementary school to see our former teachers. Our favorite teacher is probably our 4th grade teacher. We spent about an hour just catching up. 4th grade teacher took us hiking several times through out the year and even fishing trip. He is actually now a paragliding instructor on weekends and apparently ranked 12th in the country for doing so. He actually wanted to take me paragliding last year but I was extremely busy with internship. He still wants to take me but I am not really (still) sure. Below is the picture of my fourth grade teacher, me and Joonhyun (in the order).
I also got to see my first grade teacher who had a hard time remembering my name but remembered how pale my face use to be LOL. I saw my 2nd and 5th grade teachers as well but they were in a class so I couldn’t just barge in. It’s crazy how most teachers I had are still there.
After that Joonhyun had to go to his school for orchestra practice and I just came back home. Then jetlag hit again and I was knocked out for good 3 hours. Then woke up to delicious 닭강정(pronounced dak-gang-jung.
Then I think I watched TV and fell asleep. As I said, I didn’t do much. The weather is extremely humid here and rainy on and off. I love it here. I didn’t get to see Spring yet but maybe today(crossing my fingers). It’s around 2PM here, I am seeing my friend tonight and hanging out. I will post about today either tonight or tomorrow. Until then, 안녕!
Vicarious Korea - 001 Hello From Seoul
So I finally arrived in Korea 9:10 am EST and 10:10 pm KST! I have not been to much places around here yet because of such late arrival but I cannot wait for the adventures I will go on here. I will post pictures later from leaving Virginia to Japan airport. Havent really taken any pictures after that. From a little preview of today(it is 5:22 in the morning now. Thanks jetlag lol!) would be go signing up for hagwon(supplementary classes?) to polish up my Japanese and Spanish and possibly meeting up my elementary school friend who I have not seen in 10 year and seeing my aunt’s dog Spring who I LOVE!!! Anyway annyoung!
Few Words of the Day - The Least Favorite Word
If anything, the word that most Koreans seek nowadays is “healing(힐링)”. They use that word like no other. Whenever they eat something, it is healing. Whenever they listen to music, it is healing. Whenever they travel somewhere, it is healing. It’s the ultimate remedy to a sorrowful souls, but is it really?
Introduction to Impulsivity
Alright. So I made one of the most impulsive decisions in my life yesterday/today. I thought maybe this is a good time to start a blog for everyone to know what’s up. Five days until the big sayonara but here it is.
